THE PAID ADS PLAYBOOK

An ad platform is not a growth engine.
It is an amplifier.

A free playbook for founders. How to spend on ads without lighting money on fire, when to run them, when not to, and how to judge them by deals instead of clicks.

01 — THE HONEST CASE

Seven things to know about paid ads.

Each is a mechanism you can plan around, and the guide is plain about the limit.

01

Ads buy speed, not demand

This is the most important distinction in the whole subject. Organic channels — content, referrals, community, a podcast — build demand slowly and then keep producing it.

02

Ads amplify what already converts

The best time to start advertising is after you have proof that something works without it: a page that turns interested visitors into leads, a sales conversation that closes, an offer that referrals already accept.

03

Ads are the fastest message-testing instrument you can buy

That is the useful exception. Before product-market fit, a small, tightly controlled test can tell you which of three ways of describing your offer makes strangers stop — in days rather than months.

04

Ads let you choose who sees you, and your customers are the best map

Every other channel reaches whoever happens to be there. Ads let you point at a group, and the most powerful group is not described by demographics — it is described by your existing customers.

05

Ads are rented, and the rent never stops

The moment you stop paying, the reach stops. There is no back catalogue and no compounding.

06

The platform optimises for exactly what you tell it, and nothing else

Ad platforms run learning systems that find the people most likely to perform the action you report back. Report clicks and they find clickers.

07

And now the honest case against, because it should stop some readers here

Do not run ads yet if any of these is true. You cannot say what a customer is worth, so you cannot say what you can afford to pay for one.

02 — WHAT'S INSIDE

Five parts, and a last page.

Parts one to five are the thinking and the doing, worth your time even if you never touch a piece of software. The last pages show how to run it in one place.

01

The Honest Case for Paid Ads

Ads buy speed, not demand; ads amplify what already converts; ads are the fastest message-testing instrument you can buy; ads let you choose who sees you, and your customers are the best map; ads are rented, and the rent never stops; the platform optimises for exactly what you tell it, and nothing else; and the honest limit.
02

Decide the Strategy Before You Spend

Offer before creative; work out what you can afford to pay, before the platform tells you what you are paying; choose the one outcome you will report back, and make it as close to revenue as you can; build your audiences from your own customers, not from a list of interests.
03

Run Small Tests, Simply

One offer, one audience, a handful of ads; treat every creative as a hypothesis, not as art; make the landing page finish the sentence the ad started; send the real conversion back to the platform, from your server, once; give the test enough budget to say something, and no more.
04

Judge It by Deals and Revenue

Keep two ledgers, and expect them to disagree; read the path between the click and the lead; follow the lead into the pipeline before declaring a winner; respect the lag, and decide the wait in advance; be suspicious of ads that take credit for demand they did not create; scale gradually, and only what passed.
05

The checklists and the mistakes

Three checklists (Before You Spend; Launch Week; The Weekly Review) and nine mistakes.
06

Do it all in one place

How FIKR Hub carries it.
03 — WHAT GOES WRONG

Nine mistakes, all of them avoidable.

None is about talent. They are failures of method, which is good news, because method is something you can set up in advance.

01

Running ads before the offer converts

The platform amplifies whatever you give it. A page that does not convert warm visitors will convert cold ones even less, at a higher price.

02

Spending a week on the creative and an hour on the offer

The ad gets the click; the offer gets the lead. A beautiful envelope around a letter nobody wants is still unopened mail.

03

Optimising for clicks or page views

The platform finds exactly what you ask for. Ask for clickers and you get clickers, at a very attractive cost per click and no customers.

04

Seeding lookalikes with everyone

A lookalike is only as good as its seed. A list of every address you have ever collected teaches the platform to find more people who download things and leave.

05

No kill rule

Without a threshold written in advance, every test becomes "let's give it another week," and a research budget becomes a permanent cost.

06

Double-counting conversions

Browser and server events that are not deduplicated make every result look twice as good, and the platform's learning trains on the inflated number.

07

Trusting the platform's count as your count

The network's conversions include repeat forms and people who only saw the ad. Divide spend by real people, or your cost per lead is fiction.

08

Judging ads by leads instead of deals

Cheap leads that never become conversations are the most expensive kind. Follow every paid lead into the pipeline before declaring a winner.

09

Editing live tests and scaling winners too fast

Mid-test edits make results unreadable; sudden budget jumps make results unrepeatable. Both feel like optimising and both destroy what you were trying to learn.
